Shark Point
White-tips resting on the sand, turtles over the coral, and an easy drift when the tide runs.
By area, by level
Three cruising grounds, from beginner reefs off the Gilis to hammerhead water in the south. What each one is like, and what it asks of you.
Lombok's diving splits into three grounds: the North Gilis for easy reef diving and turtles, Sekotong and the Southwest Gilis for calm water and macro, and Belongas Bay in the south for schooling hammerheads on an advanced dive.
Ground one
Trawangan, Meno and Air. Calm, shallow and about two hours from Bali by fast boat - the easiest diving in Lombok and where most first dives happen.
White-tips resting on the sand, turtles over the coral, and an easy drift when the tide runs.
A gentle drift along a coral slope. The standard second dive of the day.
Shallow wall, turtles almost guaranteed, good in most conditions.
The underwater sculptures off Gili Meno, in water shallow enough to snorkel.
Ground two
The other Gilis, away from the crowds: Nanggu, Sudak, Kedis, Layar, Asahan and Rengit. Depths from 1 to 50 metres and visibility of 15 to 30.
Shallow, clear and almost current-free. White sand and turtles.
Coral slopes and quiet reef, well away from the dive boats of the north.
Good visibility and varied terrain - the best all-round site of the group.
Pygmy seahorses, frogfish and ghost pipefish. Bring the close-up lens.
Ground three
The south coast, and the reason experienced divers come to Lombok at all. Depths of 20 to 40 metres, water at 27 to 29°C, and current that has to be respected.
A pinnacle in open water. Scalloped hammerheads school here between June and October.
Deep, exposed and surge-prone. Mobulas and white-tips on a good day.
Advanced Open Water minimum. Experience in current matters more than the card.
August and September are the most reliable, and also the roughest on the surface.
May to October is the dry season and the calmest cruising. Visibility is at its best, the crossings are comfortable, and every ground on this page is in play.
The hammerhead window at Belongas runs June to October and peaks in August and September - which is also when the surface conditions are hardest. If Belongas is the reason for the trip, plan around that and accept the swell.
Outside the dry season the Gilis and Sekotong still dive well. They are sheltered, shallow and far less dependent on the weather than the south coast is.
