Gili Nanggu
Southwest Lombok, near Sekotong. Clear shallow water, white sand, sea turtles.
Under and on the surface
Over 25 named sites across three grounds, most of them shallow enough that the people not diving still see everything worth seeing.
Lombok suits a mixed group: the North Gilis and Sekotong are shallow, calm and clear enough to snorkel properly, while Belongas Bay in the south gives certified divers deep water, current and schooling hammerheads.
May to October is the dry season - the calmest seas and the best visibility. Currents are manageable across most of the island and the same route works for a newly certified diver and someone with a thousand logged.
The reefs run from coral gardens and macro in the sheltered southwest to turtles and reef sharks around the North Gilis. Gili Trawangan alone has around 25 named sites and has been called the turtle capital of the world for long enough that it is worth testing.
Belongas Bay in the south is the serious dive. The Magnet sits in 20 to 40 metres of moving water and schooling scalloped hammerheads come through between June and October. Advanced Open Water and real current experience, or not at all.
Most of what makes Lombok worth diving sits in the top ten metres, which means the people who do not dive are not sitting on the boat waiting.
Gili Nanggu and the Sekotong gilis are shallow, white-sand and almost current-free. The underwater sculptures off Gili Meno are in water shallow enough to free-dive. Pink Beach has reef straight off the sand.
Gear is aboard, and the tender will drop you on the shallow end of the same site the divers are working. Nobody has to book anything separately.
